The Episcopal Basilica and the Ancient Mosaics of Plovdiv

By Eli Ivanova, en.drumivdumi.com

The Episcopal Basilica in Plovdiv leaves a lasting impression with its history, remains and exceptionally well-preserved early Christian mosaics. The basilica functioned from the mid-4th century to the end of the 6th century and is believed to have been the episcopal cathedral of Philippopolis.

The floors of the basilica are covered with two layers of multi-colored mosaics, the total area of which exceeds 2000 sq. m. The mosaics are also the best-preserved part of the basilica.

A roof structure was built around the remains of the Episcopal Basilica and an exceptionally well-arranged visitor center was formed. If you are visiting Plovdiv, I strongly advise you to visit it.

The hut itself offers wonderful panoramic views, good accommodation conditions and delicious food. The elevation gain from Partizanska Pesen hut to Mazalta hut is not great and the route in one direction takes about 3 hours at a calm and steady pace.
