10 great things to do in Burgas, Bulgaria
Although many people associate Burgas only with the sea, it can offer you much more than just beaches and sunbathing. Burgas is not only the second largest Bulgarian seaside city, but also a place with its own atmosphere, interesting locations and an abundance of cultural events all over the year. It is no coincidence that it has won several times the annual Darik Radio poll for the Best City to Live in Bulgaria.
If you are traveling to the Bulgarian Southern Black Sea Coast, I advise you to stop and spend at least a few hours walking around the city and its surroundings. In this article I tell you in detail about Burgas attractions and things to do.
The village of Chavdar and archaeological Park „Topolnitsa“
Chavdar is a village located in Western Bulgaria (the Balkan Mountains). It is the only settlement in the municipality of Chavdar. Just 80 km. from Sofia, the village is a great option for a day trip near the capital city. One of our favorite places here is the central square – it has a mini amphitheater, wooden bridges and arches, fountains, rest areas, and even a rock garden (alpineum). While in the village, you can also visit the Chavdar Folklore Center, St. George’s Chapel, and the church of St. Archangel Michael.
Just 2 km. south of the village lies the аrchaeological Park „Topolnitsa“. There, you’ll find a reconstruction of an еarly Neolithic settlement, workshops for leather processing and stone tools. A short walk along the park’s paths will take you to a chapel that is open to visitors. It is dedicated to the village’s patron saint – Saint Petka. From the panoramic viewpoint, you can enjoy a stunning view of the Topolnitsa River and the entire Zlatitsa-Pirdop Valley.

Santa Severa Castle – the secret fortress of the sea near Rome
Santa Severa is not just a TV series location, it is not just a museum, it is not just a coastal fortress. This is a place where time is not linear – here it folds and intertwines. You step on ancient Etruscan sand, touch medieval walls, contemplate the sea as sailors, merchants, knights and maybe … actors from the Medici did. Here you can feel like a knight, an Etruscan archaeologist, or just a stylish tourist with a sense of the magic of the past… and a GPS that sometimes takes you exactly where you need to go, even if you didn’t plan it. A visit is like opening an old book of sea
legends, but going inside. And if you hear strange sounds from the towers, don’t be alarmed. It’s probably just the wind… or Santa Severa checking to see if you’ve bought a discounted ticket.
