So here we are, halfway through the year of banter and tales of travels near and far. The „best of Bulgarian blogs“ collection continues, and our thirst for new adventures never ceases. In our August selection you will find interesting and exotic destinations as well as beautiful Bulgarian places. Happy reading!
Tuscany for Experts – Merigar West Tibetan Complex
Who would have thought that they could see the characteristic ornate stupas and Buddha statues, immersed in beech and chestnut forests, in the Tuscan countryside? I will surprise you, but many Tuscans do not think about it and do not even know that „under their noses“ there is not just one or two stupas, but a whole Tibetan complex. Tuscany outside the popular sights is very special, beautiful, interesting and unspoiled. Escape the tourist crowds in this place steeped in silence and so much beauty. It is in contrast to anything you imagine you might see in Italy. An absolutely unique experience that you will remember long after your visit!

Ancient Fortress at Cape St. Athanas, Byala
At the end of Cape St. Atanas near the town of Byala lays an ancient settlement and a late antique fortress. This site is multi-layered as there are records of several historical periods. The earliest traces of life on this site date from around the 6th century BC, with the main population being Thracians. Here they performed their rituals. Later, human settlement began, with the heyday in the 4th-6th centuries AD when it became an Episcopal centre after the settlement of Christianity. Winemaking was the main livelihood here. Architectural-historical reserve Svezhen – a descendant of ancient Ajar and a settlement of boyars
Once again, I’m coming back here – to Svezhen!
What a village! What a region!
So steeped in history!
It is no accident that today the place is preserved as an architectural-historical reserve or in short – AHR Svezhen.
There’s something in Svezhen!
It floats through the air…
Noises with the sound of the forest…
Thundering with the roar of storms…
Sings with the sound on Svezhenska river…
It creaks with the creaking of the old dilapidated Adjarian houses…
It can be seen on the faces of the people sitting at the tables of the local horemag…
You can feel it in the streets as you step on the worn cobblestones…
Something great…
Something special…
Something Bulgarian and native!
It must be the authentic Bulgarian spirit that still inhabits these authentic Bulgarian villages and cannot be felt anywhere else.

Sokolski monastery “Assumption of Virgin Mary”
The Sokolski monastery is located near the city of Gabrovo and it is one of my favorite places in Bulgaria. I have known it since I was a child and over the years I have visited it many times.
From the monastery courtyard, always neat and well-kept, there are beautiful views. Yes, there is no panorama in all directions, but it is still beautiful. Most impressive in the holy place are the Church of the Assumption, so richly painted inside and out. In the courtyard there is a stone fountain with eight spouts, which is a valuable architectural monument, the work of Bulgarian master Kolyu Ficheto.
The monastery can be reached by car. You can also hike from the nearby well-known museum Etara to the monastery.
Stoykite village
With my new article, we’re heading straight to the mountains. Have you heard of the village of Stoikite?
Hidden among picturesque mountain hills, Stoikite is a place where tradition and nature blend in unique harmony. This small Rhodope village is a cultural center that preserves and passes down centuries-old traditions. Discover more about the only interactive bagpipe museum, the festival held there, and the thrilling adventure I experienced. These and many more fascinating facts about Stoikite can be found in my new travelogue.
