Wild, wild Samothrace

From Stanislava, Sun and Sany

Samothrace is a Greek island located in the northeastern part of the Aegean Sea, near the border with Turkey. What sets it apart from other Greek islands are the numerous mineral springs at the foot of Mount Saos, the mountain “vatra”, and, above all, the island’s unique atmosphere. Most visitors here are people from Greece and abroad who lead a more free-spirited and alternative lifestyle. You won’t find any glitzy hotels or noisy beach bars here. A vacation on the island of Samothraki can be described as nature-oriented, unpretentious, and even wild. Here’s what awaits you and what you can see.

Circular hike to Kabul Peak in Rila

By Eli Ivanova, en.drumivdumi.com

Kabul Peak is a great option if you want to climb a high peak in Rila without taking on an overly long or complicated hike. Its proximity to the Seven Rila Lakes is another major advantage, as you can easily combine the climb with a visit to the lakes and a scenic circular route. This makes for a more varied hike, with changing perspectives of Kabul Peak and the surrounding Rila landscapes.

The route I am talking about starts with the lift from Panichishte to the Rila Lakes hut. From the hut, a hiking trail begins up to the plateau to Lake Babreka and then to Lake Okoto. From Lake Okoto, take the path to the right to the saddle between Otovishki Peak and Kabul Peak, from where you can go directly to the summit. The descent is in a northerly direction to the Zeleni preslap area, not far from the lower station of the lift.

Many people associate Seven Sisters with the full coastal hike between Seaford and Eastbourne. That is a rewarding route, but it requires most of the day and a reasonable level of stamina. We chose a shorter version, starting at Seven Sisters Country Park and finishing at Birling Gap.
